Interactive Tools
SmartMusic
This is software that is typically purchased through the school for students to use for practicing, using the accompaniment feature, and for teachers to use for playing tests or just simple assessments of how students are performing their music. While this software is not free, it is definitely a great investment for a school to make to help further students' musical abilities. My interactions with this software has been really great, especially for working with the accompaniment feature that follows along with the music as it is being performed. It is a great tool not only for assessment, but also to help students learn their music before they meet with their pianist. INTASC STANDARD Standard #6: Assessment The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making. |

NoteWorks
This is a free application available in both the Google Play Store and the App Store. I have seen this used in beginning band and choir classrooms who are fortunate enough to have a class set of iPads. This is not only a great learning tool to practice the note names on the grand staff, but it is also entertaining enough to keep the students working to get a better score. A great way to apply this is to challenge the students to get their best score, preferably a perfect score, and then have them send it or show it to the teacher for credit. INTASC STANDARD Standard #4: Content Knowledge The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content. |
